Selling used books online
There are so many success stores out there on blogs and social media platforms like Reddit, where people state they’ve made thousands of dollars by selling used books online.
In reality, unless you’re going out to look for books at places like thrift stores and yard sales specifically to resell, or have a big collection of books to sell, you’re probably not going to make thousands each month from this venture.

As we mentioned above, with sites like C4B, making a profit from your books is really easy.
So, take a look at our Cash4Books review to see if the platform is for you.
How it works
Okay, you have your books in hand and you’re excited to make a profit.
So, what now?
Well, the first step is to visit their official website.
Then, here’s what you need to do:
1. Search for your title and get an offer
On the website, you need to enter your book’s ISBN.
The ISBN, which is usually about 10 to 13 digits long, can be found either on the back cover or the inside of the front cover of your book.
Advertisements
Prior to 2007, books had a 10 digit ISBN. But, after 2007, assigned ISBN’s changed to 13 digits.
Books made before 1970 generally don’t have an ISBN number, unfortunately.
The website mainly purchases textbooks and books with a publication date of 2014 or newer.
We did notice that compared to textbooks, more fiction books came up with this message when we entered their ISBN:
“Unfortunately we’re not currently buying the following books: [book title].”
We did get this message for the occasional textbook, but it was far more common with fiction books, like Girl on the Train, Gone Girl, Before I go to Sleep, Wuthering Heights and the Bourne Identity.
But, don’t assume that the site won’t buy the fiction book that you have.
Enter your ISBN for all the books you have to see if you can sell it on the platform, and how much you will get for it.
Don’t assume that just because it’s a fiction book that the site won’t buy it.
Once you’ve entered the ISBN, the book will automatically go into your seller’s cart, if C4B has an offer for it of course.
2. Ship your books
If you are happy with the amount that the website wants to offer to you, then click on “Sell my Books Now” and complete the checkout process.
Now, it’s time to ship your books to the site.
Handily enough, the website provides you with a prepaid shipping label.
So, shipping is free!
You’ll need to ship via Us Post Office or FedEx though.
We do recommend that you have a good read of the Used Book Condition Policy.
This outlines the condition that your book needs to be in to be accepted by the site. After all, you don’t want to send your book to the site, only for them to reject it.
3. Get paid
When the site receives your books and checks their condition, it will pay you.
Generally, you receive your payment within 13 days from the day you mailed your books.
This is just an average time-frame, however.
Depending on where you live and what courier you choose to use the time it takes to receive payment could be slightly more or less than that.
You can receive your payment via PayPal or Check.
The amount you were quoted and the amount that you get from the website might differ.
This is because when the site receives your books it inspects them.
And, if it doesn’t meet the terms in the Used Book Condition Policy, then the payment may be reduced.
If the website isn’t able to purchase your book, it will keep it for up to 30 days. Within this time-frame, you can have it returned, but you may have to pay for it.
How much money can you make?
Okay, so now you’re probably wondering, “how much money can I make from selling my used books on Cash4Books?”
Well, how much you can earn depends on quite a few factors, like what types of books you sell and how many of them you sell.
Some books are far more valuable than others.
One book might only net you a few bucks, whereas another one might garner you $100 or so.
Here are a few examples of prices on offer, at the time of writing, for a few different books:
- Mathematics for Elementary Teachers with Activities (4th Edition): $25.00
- Understanding Ultrasound Physics: $33.15
- Textbook of Diagnostic Sonography: 2-Volume Set, 8e: $110.77
- Ryan’s Retina: 3 Volume Set, 6e: $140.00
- The Retinal Atlas, 2e: $132.28
- Textbook of Veterinary Anatomy: $24.80
- The Great Gatsby: $1.18
Hopefully this gives you a better idea of what kind of money you can expect to get for your books.
Remember that each book will bring in a different price. So, you won’t know what you will earn from a book until you enter its ISBN.
Is Cash4Books legitimate?
So, now you know how the site works and have an idea of how much you can sell used books for on there, you’re probably wondering is it legitimate or is it a scam?
If you send off your books, will you actually get paid for them?
Well, you’ll be glad to know that the answer is yes.
When you ship your books to the site, you get paid – if they meet the site’s clearly outlined conditions that is.

There is!
The website has an app available for iPhone and Android devices.

The app is really useful because you can use it to scan barcodes.
This means that you don’t even need to enter your book’s ISBN manually to get a quote.
Also, it can be handy for figuring out whether a book is worth buying to resell.
Let’s say, for example, that you find a book that’s $5 in a thrift store. You’re considering buying the book, but you don’t know whether you’d make a profit from reselling it to Cash4Books, or if it would even buy it from you.
With the app, you can simply scan the book while you’re in the store, and get an instant quote. Then, if you see that you will indeed make a good profit from it, then you can buy it.
It takes the guesswork out of buying books to resell them.
Takeaway
If you want to make a good profit selling used books, then consider using Cash4Books.
