Pandas are an important species for conservation efforts, as they are considered endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. Efforts to protect and preserve pandas in the wild have been successful in recent years, with their population slowly increasing.

Did you know:  For quite awhile scientists have debated about whether a panda is a bear or a raccoon as it shares characteristics of both.

Giant pandas (large black and white animals from China) are part of the bear family -- their closest relative is the Spectacled Bear.

Red pandas (smaller red and white animals, also from China) are the last remaining animals in their family -- all of their relatives are extinct.  Red pandas do share a lot of traits with the raccoon family and the bear family but they belong to their own family, the Ailuridae.
