Berry Coloring Pages

Welcome to our Berries coloring pages section.

Berries burst forth in a riot of color, dotting bushes and vines with vibrant jewels of nature. From the deep blues of blueberries to the rich reds of raspberries and the glossy black of blackberries, these small fruits offer a visual feast as much as a culinary one. Nestled among lush leaves, each berry is a capsule of flavor, waiting to be discovered beneath dew-kissed mornings or in the shaded havens of wild forests. The scene is a dance of light and shadow, where the sun filters through branches, illuminating each berry in a spotlight of natural beauty. This collection captures the delightful essence of berry picking, a cherished activity that connects us to the earth and the simple joys of harvesting nature’s bounty.

Aggregate fruits or "compound berries", such as blackberries and raspberries, are commonly known as berries despite their complex structure of multiple drupelets, each derived from an individual ovary within a single flower.

Cranberries: Known for their tart flavor, cranberries are small, hard berries that grow on evergreen dwarf shrubs and are popularly used in sauces and juices, especially around holiday seasons.

Gooseberries: Gooseberries are small, round fruits that can range in color from green to red or purple. They have a tart, slightly sweet flavor and are commonly used in jams, desserts, and savory sauces. Rich in vitamin C and fiber, gooseberries add a burst of flavor and nutrition to any dish.

Kiwis: With a fuzzy brown exterior and bright green, sweet-tart flesh speckled with tiny black seeds, kiwis are nutrient-rich berries that add a tropical flair to any fruit salad.

Strawberries, while commonly referred to as berries in everyday language, are actually not true botanical berries. Botanically, a true berry is a simple fruit with seeds and pulp produced from the ovary of a single flower, like grapes or bananas. Strawberries, however, develop from a flower that has multiple ovaries, making them an aggregate fruit.

Tomatoes: Often used as a vegetable in cooking, tomatoes are actually berries that boast a vibrant red color and a versatile flavor profile, making them a staple in cuisines worldwide.

The case of Fruit v. Vegatable isn't just idle classroom conversation... it's a matter that's gone all the way to the US Supreme court!! Back in 1893, the United States Supreme Court found itself entangled in one of the juiciest debates of all time: were tomatoes fruits or vegetables? This wasn’t just a case of idle curiosity—it all boiled down to cold, hard cash. According to the Tariff Act of 1883, imported vegetables got slapped with a tax, while fruits got off scot-free. Naturally, the Nix family, who were in the tomato-importing business, were keen to prove their precious produce was fruity.

Now, botanically speaking, tomatoes are fruits. They develop from the ovary of a flower and are full of seeds. But the Supreme Court, led by Justice Horace Gray, wasn’t about to get bogged down in botanical nitty-gritty. In the landmark case Nix v. Hedden, they ruled unanimously that tomatoes should be classified as vegetables for tariff purposes. Why? Because in the real world of dinner plates and soup pots, tomatoes were served as part of the main course, not as dessert.

Justice Gray, likely with a straight face, explained that everyday folks weren’t whipping up tomato sundaes or popping cherry tomatoes into fruit salads. Instead, tomatoes were found hanging out in savory dishes alongside their vegetable buddies. So, in the eyes of the Court, tomatoes were vegetables—even if Mother Nature insisted otherwise.

This case became a classic example of how legal and culinary worlds can collide in the most unexpected and hilarious ways. It’s not every day that the highest court in the land has to rule on your garden salad, but hey, at least they settled the matter once and for all... or did they? The great fruit versus vegetable debate lives on, making its way into trivia nights and dinner table discussions everywhere.

Fruits you might not think are berries, but technically (scientifically) are!

Banana - Technically a berry because it develops from a single flower with a single ovary and contains multiple seeds. (the seeds are immature when we eat them -- they're the tiny black specks in the center of a banana).

Surprisingly classified as berries, bananas have a sweet flavor and creamy texture, making them a favorite fruit for eating on-the-go, as well as for baking and smoothies.

Citrus Fruits are technically classified as berries in botanical terms! More specifically, they are a type of berry known as a hesperidium. This category is unique to citrus fruits, which also includes oranges, limes, and grapefruits.

Cucumber: Cucumbers also qualify as berries, specifically a type known as "pepo" — a berry with a hard rind. Like cranberries, cucumbers develop from a single flower and contain multiple seeds embedded within their fleshy interior.

Cool, right!?

Gourds are a type of berry known as a "pepo." This botanical category includes fruits that have a hard outer rind and no internal divisions, which encompasses most members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as pumpkins, cucumbers, and melons.

Pumpkins develop from the flower of the pumpkin plant and contain seeds, which are key characteristics of fruits. While they are commonly associated with vegetables due to their savory culinary uses, such as in soups, pies, and roasts, from a botanical standpoint, they are fruits. They are particularly famous for their role in dishes like pumpkin pie and for being carved as jack-o'-lanterns during Halloween.

Did you know that watermelons are actually a type of berry called a "pepo"? That might sound funny because they are so big and not like little berries we usually see. Just like berries, watermelons grow from flowers and have seeds inside. They have a special kind of berry skin that's really tough and hard, which helps protect the sweet, juicy inside that we love to eat in the summer!
