Five fun facts about frogs:

  1. Wide Variety: There are over 5,000 species of frogs. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica and can live in a variety of environments, including forests, swamps, deserts, and even the Arctic Circle.
  2. Remarkable Jumpers: Frogs are famous for their leaping abilities. Some species can jump up to 20 times their body length. That's the equivalent of a human jumping nearly 100 feet!
  3. Diverse Diet: Frogs are primarily carnivores, and they have a very wide range of diets. Most smaller frogs eat insects like flies and mosquitoes, but larger species can eat small animals like mice, small snakes, and even other frogs.
  4. Frogs vs. Toads: All toads are frogs, but not all frogs are toads. The distinction comes from their skin and habitat. Generally, "true frogs" have smooth, moist skin and long, powerful hind legs, while toads often have drier, bumpy skin and shorter legs.
  5. Metamorphosis: Frogs undergo a process called metamorphosis where they change from tadpoles (which look like little fish) into adult frogs. This transformation includes the development of legs, the absorption of the tail, and the development of lungs for breathing air.

Frogs are fascinating creatures that play an important role in the ecosystem, controlling insect populations and serving as indicators of environmental health due to their permeable skin. They are certainly a fun topic to learn about!
